The start of a journey

As a Foodie it is a tough journey to give up wheat, dairy and brown rice!  It has been a great first month and I feel clear enough to start blogging about this journey, so that I can help others understand and I can learn more myself.

The first thing I have learned is that I am not alone, every time I bring up Gluten free someone is either on this diet or knows someone who is.

Gluten is the complex found in wheat. The good news is that you can eat rice and potatoes, rice flour is widely available. Most grocery stores have gluten free products too.

Gluten-free food is normally seen as a diet for celiac disease, but people with a gluten allergy also avoid the grains. It is about educating yourself, reading labels, learning the alternatives and being very positive!

I spent my first week in constant hunger but have learned what to eat pretty quickly, potato chips for breakfast is not a great alternative. Your body learns to crave healthy foods in no time.

Giving up gluten doesn't mean you have to give up bread and baked goods, it does mean using alternate flours and grains. The added challenge in my household is no almond milk or almond flour, which are very popular with a gluten/dairy diet.

Reading food labels is not a new concept to me because of the nut allergy with my daughter.

I know where to look for the allergy statement, now I'm just searching for wheat as well as tree nuts!

If you are really unsure then choose a food that is clearly labelled Gluten free.

The great part of this journey is self awareness and making very healthy choices. The other great part is everything has a gluten free option, even beer.

That's all for today, signing off because I'm starving!
